Functional appliances are specialized orthodontic devices used primarily to correct skeletal Class II malocclusions. These appliances, which can be either removable or fixed, leverage the muscles of the face and jaw to improve dental alignment. They are particularly effective in cases with a retrusive mandible. Functional appliances work by modifying the soft tissue around the teeth, disrupting existing occlusion, and applying intermaxillary force. Examples of removable functional appliances include the Activator, Bionator, Frankel Appliance, and Twin Block, while fixed types include the Herbst appliance and Jasper Jumper.
